Black Mold Removal in Tacoma

When people call about black mold in Tacoma, they are usually looking at one of three things: the underside of a subfloor over a damp crawl space, the lower few feet of a basement wall, or a north-facing closet or exterior wall in an older house that goes dark every winter. The color alone does not identify the species. Plenty of common molds are black or near-black, and the one people mean when they say black mold, Stachybotrys, tends to show up on material that has been genuinely wet for a long stretch — paper-faced drywall, wet framing, cellulose — not on a lightly damp bathroom ceiling.

Black Mold Removal

We say that plainly because the honest answer usually lowers the temperature. Our approach does not change based on the color. Whatever is growing gets contained, removed, and cleaned the same way, and the water feeding it gets fixed. If you want the species identified for your own peace of mind or for a file, we can sample and have a lab tell you. If you do not, we are not going to insist on testing to justify the work.

What we do care about is how long it has been wet and how much material it has gotten into. Dark growth spreading in a sheet across the subfloor above a crawl space with bare soil means years of upward evaporation, not a recent leak. Dark staining two feet up a basement wall means water has been coming through that wall every wet season. Black growth in a closet on a north wall means that surface has been running near dew point through the overcast months and there is not enough air movement or insulation there. Each of those has a different fix, and the fix is what stops the recurrence.

Removal follows the industry standard. The work area is sealed off with sheeting and put under negative pressure with filtration so nothing migrates into the rest of the house. Porous material that cannot be cleaned comes out and is bagged inside containment. Framing, sheathing, and masonry are HEPA-vacuumed and detail-cleaned. The assembly is dried and verified with meters. We do not disturb heavy growth without containment, because dry-scraping or sanding is what actually puts a large volume of spores into a home's air.

If you have already scrubbed at it with bleach, that is common and not a disaster. Bleach on porous wood is mostly water plus a surface effect — it lightens the color and leaves the roots and the moisture behind, which is why it comes back. Tell us what you used and where so we can plan the scope accurately.

The health question comes up in nearly every call. We are a remediation contractor, not a medical provider, so we will not tell you what your symptoms mean. What we can say is that reducing the amount of mold and the moisture that sustains it is the part we control, and we will document what was there and what we removed so your doctor or your landlord has something factual to work from.

We serve Tacoma, Lakewood, Puyallup, University Place, Federal Way, Auburn, Gig Harbor, Spanaway, Parkland, Bonney Lake, Sumner, Fife, Steilacoom, and DuPont, and when a policy covers the loss we bill the insurer directly.
